When I moved to Santa Cruz in the mid-’60s it was a skateboarder’s utopia. It was a destination that any discerning skater had to make a trip to. No cops. No hassles. Just skating and rad vibes, the way it was supposed to be. Not to mention the most righteous terrain on the planet.

 

It seemed like it would last forever, but like any society built on a single premise, Santa Cruz started to decay, and what was once a skateboarder’s paradise became a filthy beach ghetto. It’s still all about the skating and not much else. That’s probably why the city fell apart in the first place…—Terkin Von Knobske

Cuando me mudé a Santa Cruz a mediados de los 60, era la utopia de los skaters, Era un destino que cualquier skater tenia que visitar. Sin Polis , sin agobios. Solo patinar y vibraciones radicales, como tenia que ser. Sin mencionar el terreno mas apropiado del planeta.

Parecia que iba a durar para siempre, pero como cualquier otra sociedad basada en una sola premisa, Santa Cruz , comenzó a decaer, y lo que fué una vez un paraiso del skater, se convirtio en un ghetto sucio de playa. Todo lo rodea el skate y no mucho mas. Y eso es por lo cual la ciudad se vino abajo en primer lugar _ Terkin Von Knobse.

It’s a typical day in the life of the Deathwish gang. The sessions and locations were influenced by gangs, Hollywood, and Los Angeles culture. It wasn’t much of a stretch because skate crews can be very gang-like to begin with. The Deathwish dudes are a tight-knit crew. Overall, I don’t think this is too far from what these guys are actually like. It’s really close to the truth. You wouldn’t be surprised if you saw Jon Dickson on the beach asleep in the morning.—Skin Phillips

Basically, we ended up building jump ramps and taking them to various things when our original idea was to do some stunt-like mega obstacles. But of course the police and security of the world made those big ideas impossible, and now we have this. WHOOPS!—Ed Templeton
